Literary Arts Partnership at UCF

Spring 2003-Fall 2003

Fall 2003:

  • The Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, Ms. Thaxton taught Advanced Poetry Writing at UCF and another faculty member, Ms. Susan Spraker taught Advanced Fiction Writing. Each of these classes had a service-learning component, and students, under their directions, designed and lead twelve creative writing workshops.

  • Summer 2003:

  • Bannum Place (a halfway house for reintegrating felons). We provided a basic writing skills and creative writing class.

  • Spring 2003:

  • PACE Center for Girls. Five UCF undergraduate students and Ms. Thaxton designed and taught writing to a group of ten girls. At the conclusion of the ten-week workshop, the UCF students received a grant from Youth Service America and held a public event where the girls at PACE read the poetry that they had written during the workshop. At this event, we enlisted the talents of a dozen more UCF students, who helped with food, driving, cleanup, and entertainment for the program.
