Literature

Program Requirements:
Each student must complete 33 hours of study. This includes 18 hours from six core courses, 3 hours from a linguistics course, 6 hours from two elective courses, and 6 hours from thesis credit or from two additional courses. Each student must also pass a comprehensive examination.

  1. Required Courses — 18 Core Hours and 3 Linguistics Hours
    • ENG 5009 Methods of Bibliography and Research (3 hours)
      Introduction to graduate-level research methods and related professional issues in the field of English.
    • ENG 5018 Literary Criticism (3 hours)
      Historical survey of major critics from classical antiquity to the modern era.
    • LIT 6009 Literary Genres (3 hours)
      Provenance, structure, and critical problems in a specific genre such as tragedy, the epic, the novel, or the lyric. May be repeated for credit when content is different.
    • LIT 6105 World Literature (3 hours)
      Study of the influence on British and American literature of selected foreign works read in translation. May be repeated for credit when content is different.
    • LIT 6365 Movements in Literature (3 hours)
      Study of a movement such as naturalism, romanticism, or classicism, or of a literary period such as the Baroque or the Southern Renaissance. May be repeated for credit when content is different.
    • LIT 6246 Major Authors (3 hours)
      Study of a single author or of two or three associated authors, with emphasis on biography, bibliography, and style. May be repeated for credit when content is different.
    • LIN 5137 Linguistics (3 hours)*
      Modern linguistic theories and studies focusing on language acquisition and development, contemporary American English, semantics, and paralinguistics.

    *May be waived if the student has completed a course in linguistics at the 4000 level or above with a grade of A or B.

  2. Electives — 6 Hours
    Some sample elective courses are:

    • LIN 5675 English Grammar and Usage (3 hours)
    • LIT 5028 Form and Theory of Short Story (3 hours)
    • LIT 5250 The Victorian Age: Poetry (3 hours)
    • LIT 5309 Popular Culture and Media (3 hours)
    • LIT 5387 Captives, Housewives, and Coquettes (3 hours)
    • LIT 5556 Advanced Feminist Theories (3 hours)

  3. Comprehensive Examination

  4. Specialization Option (Choose A or B)--6 Hours

    1. Non-Thesis Option
      The student will complete 6 additional hours in 6000-level literature coursework.
    2. Thesis Option
      While enrolled in LIT 6971, Thesis, the student will complete a formal thesis selected in consultation with an advisory committee and will meet both departmental and university requirements for the thesis.
