Literature

The Master of Arts degree in literature offers advanced training in various literatures and analytical approaches. The faculty actively publishes in and teaches a wide range of areas, from Shakespeare to Caribbean literature to American women writers. Many courses in the program are interdisciplinary, integrating literature with such areas as the visual arts, film, music, history, and politics.

Through the department's Distinguished Author Series, students have the opportunity to meet highly acclaimed writers in an informal setting. The series has hosted such internationally renowned authors as Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, Margaret Atwood, Rita Dove, Edward Albee, Joseph Heller, Grace Paley, E.L. Doctorow, and Tobias Wolff. A few students also have an opportunity to assist with two national literary journals--The Florida Review and The Faulkner Journal--housed in the department.
