Creative Writing

Welcome to the M.F.A. in creative writing, which has concentrations in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Our workshop-intensive program emphasizes the study of theory and published writing alongside the closely analyzed production of student texts. Our prolific, dedicated faculty members have won numerous prestigious awards for their work and have served as officers in the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) and other national organizations.

The English Department houses two creative writing journals--the nationally recognized Florida Review and the Cypress Dome. The latter is run by the student organization the Cypress Dome Society. The department offers editorial internships each year for the Florida Review and The Faulker Journal, another national publication. In addition, graduate students are eligible for scholarships to the Atlantic Center for the Arts. This artistic retreat at New Smyrna Beach offers three-week residencies with artists such as Sonia Sanchez and W.P. Kinsella.

The department sponsors an annual Distinguished Author Series featuring a talk by an internationally acclaimed writer. Past guests include Toni Morrison, Joseph Heller, Joyce Carol Oates, Edward Albee, Margaret Atwood, and Grace Paley. Students also have opportunities to meet important writers through the Writers in the Sun series, which brings three to four nationally known writers per year. Finally, students present their work along with faculty members in the Student and Faculty Reading Series.
